Live Long and Prosper: A Jewish Connection On Sunday at Beth El, some of us in Mrs. Carroll's 6th Grade talked in class about Birkat HaCohanim, the priestly blessing, and how the "Live Long and Prosper" hand gesture, used by Leonard Nimoy in his role as the Vulcan Spock in the original Star Trek series, derived from the position of the priestly class's outstretched hands during this blessing, also known, in Yiddish, as duchening. I told the students that this might have been something Nimoy saw while in shul with his zaide.
